Natural Building 101

This talk will focus on the history and current practice of natural building.  We will go through the practical steps of creating a natural building and outline the common materials used.  We will also talk about the impact of Natural Building on the builders and occupants as well as the greater community and world.  This discussion will include, material streams, carbon sequestration, building legacy, carcinogenic and health concerns, the fear of nature/ artificial is better mentality, and necessity of craft. 

About Jamie-
Jamie Carestio is a builder, designer and environmentalist with more than 20 years of experience working in the trade. He owns and manages Live Edge Building & Design, constructing a diversity of structures rooted in locally sourced materials. He is a versatile craftsman who loves working with clay, sand, straw, stone and wood to create inspiring buildings that harmonize with the landscape. He also has a strong skill set in conventional carpentry to support his work. 

Jamie built the strawbale, timber frame home on his family farm in Hector where he lives with his wife, Katherine, 4-year-old daughter and 9-month-old son. At the home farm, he has also built roundwood barns and timber frame outbuildings. He is an avid gardener, cyclist and outdoor enthusiast.
